Joint Arthritis Rehabilitation

What Is Joint Arthritis?

Joint arthritis occurs when the cartilage, joint capsule, and surrounding tissues begin to degenerate or become inflamed. Arthritis can affect any joint, most commonly the knees, hips, spine, shoulders, and hands.

There are two primary categories:

  • Osteoarthritis (OA): Degenerative “wear‑and‑tear” changes in cartilage and joint surfaces.
  • Inflammatory arthritis: Immune‑driven conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis.

Physiotherapy is essential for reducing pain, improving mobility, and slowing progression by optimizing joint mechanics and muscular support.

Why Arthritis Develops

  • Age‑related cartilage thinning
  • Previous injuries (sprains, fractures, ligament tears)
  • Poor biomechanics or alignment
  • Repetitive strain or occupational loading
  • Muscle weakness or imbalance
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Inflammatory autoimmune conditions

Arthritis is not simply “wearing out”, it is often a mechanical and biological imbalance that can be improved with targeted rehabilitation.

Typical Symptoms

  • Joint pain or stiffness
  • Swelling or warmth
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Clicking, grinding, or crepitus
  • Pain during weight‑bearing or repetitive tasks
  • Morning stiffness that improves with movement
  • Difficulty with stairs, kneeling, gripping, or prolonged standing

Symptoms may fluctuate depending on activity level, stress, and inflammation.

How Physiotherapy Helps

Physiotherapy focuses on restoring joint mobility, improving muscle support, and reducing mechanical stress on the affected joint. Proper rehabilitation slows progression and improves daily function.

Treatment Focus

  • Manual therapy to reduce stiffness and improve joint glide
  • Joint mobilization to improve cartilage nutrition and movement
  • Biomechanics analysis to correct load distribution
  • Strengthening protocols for stabilizing muscles
  • Neuromuscular training to improve joint control
  • Scientific‑guided rehab for progressive loading
  • Bracing or taping when temporary support is needed
  • Education on pacing, load management, and flare‑up prevention

When to Seek Help

Book an assessment if you experience:

  • Stiffness that limits daily activities
  • Swelling or warmth around a joint
  • Difficulty with stairs, gripping, or weight‑bearing
  • Clicking or grinding sensations
  • A previous injury that never fully recovered

Early intervention prevents worsening symptoms and improves long‑term joint health.
